The Upstarts: DCWs six-month work experience placements for creative activists

Exciting news! We’ve decided to extend our placement programme to six months to give you an introduction to the world of PR, events, activism and a whole heap of other wonderfully creative things we’ve got on the horizon.

If you’ve made it this far, you’ll hopefully know at least a little bit about us and what we stand for. But ultimately – we’re a creative agency with activism at our heart. That means we want to work at the intersection of creativity and societal change.  We also believe in creating opportunity for all in what can be a tough industry to enter.

Some of the campaigns we’re proud of include our work with Elvie and the #LeaksHappen peeing billboard and our Hairytales work for Tangle Teezer.

What will you get up to during the placement?

No day is the same. Depending on what we’ve got in the pipeline and where your skills lie, we’ll give you the best tools to help kick-start the experience you’ll need to launch your career.

One day you could be attending a media event on natural health, the next you could be drafting a blog post on how sexism is still rife within British journalism or delving into the hidden word of subvertising.

Whatever we’ve got on, we want you to be brave enough to tackle it head first. After all, you learn best by actually doing.

During the placement you’ll have a dedicated line manager who will be on hand to answer questions, explain processes and provide guidance  when you need it – we’re a close knit team who muck in to help each other, so we’re looking for like-minded people who are willing to do the same.

If you’re still not sure what you might be getting up to on a DCW placement, we caught up with Alma Lukito who completed a placement with us last year. Here’s what she had to say:

“While most placements have juniors sitting at their desks twiddling their thumbs, Don’t Cry Wolf was far from that. Not only did the team make sure my needs and passions were always considered, but I was able to get my hands stuck into so many pockets of the PR industry and learned so much in such a short period of time.

“Because the team is smaller and more intimate, there was also never any confusion or doubt about who you could ask for help, and at times I felt like I wasn’t asking enough questions instead of feeling annoying for asking too many, which is always a good sign. It would be impossible to leave Don’t Cry Wolf without a wealth of knowledge and a new inspired outlook on where brand activism is headed.”

What experience do I need to have in order to apply?

We’re looking for individuals who are curious, creative and honest, and let’s face it, this isn’t always something that can always be found on a CV or job application. If you’re wondering if you need a degree – you don’t.

We want to know why you want to work with us, what interesting campaigns you’ve seen or even which brands inspire you, not whether or not you have a piece of paper with a qualification on.

Who can apply to the placement?

The short answer – anyone and everyone from any location with a valid work visa or UK passport.  Whether you’re just out of uni, returning from a career break, looking to get some experience or simply want to try something new, we want to give everyone a taste of Don’t Cry Wolf.

When do your placements start/run and what is the process like?

We have multiple placements throughout the year, which we advertise on our social channels. We open these out for applications roughly a month prior for two weeks and will then hold a two-stage interview process which typically involves a couple of chats with different members of the team and a small creative task so we can really get to know you.

Can I apply if I don’t live in London?

We have a remote working policy, which means you can work from anywhere . We do have a flexible office subscription available, which most of the team use to work together 1-2 days a week in London, however, we welcome applicants from all over the UK to apply.

Occasionally we will hold team training sessions or team meals, which we do like to have in-person (we’re a social group after all!), but we’ll book these into our diaries well in advance.

Is there potential for a job at the end of it?

We’ve decided on a six-month placement length to give as many people the chance to experience a taste of the PR world throughout the year. We know it’s so important, especially when you’re still trying to figure out which direction you want to go in, to get a taste of a lot of different places. Never say never however. If we’re absolutely blown away and feel like we’d be missing a limb if you left, there’s always a chat to be had…

Do I get paid?

Of course, all of our placements pay a London Living Wage and you are also entitled to just over 14 paid holiday days during this time too.

How do I apply?
